Asphalt failure and development of potholes are the result of moisture penetrating the asphalt surface through surface cracking. The moisture either destroys the sub-base and the asphalt surface collapses or the moisture freezes and further expands asphalt cracking.
Removal & Replacement
Removal & Replacement
is one of most common and economical types of repair for isolated areas which have failed or developed into a pothole. The specified area is either removed in broken piece form or by milling (grinding the asphalt surface). (The milling / grinding process provides a safe and efficient way of removing asphalt surface when compared to removing larger pieces of broken material with skidsteers.) The remaining gravel sub-base is re-compacted or completely removed & replaced. Sub-base material is thoroughly compacted prior to paving. Asphalt Binder material is installed to the specified thickness and vibratory compacted. Asphalt Surface material is installed to the specified thickness and vibratory compacted.
Asphalt Resurfacing (Overlaying)
includes the installation of a new layer of asphalt across the entire parking lot without removing the existing asphalt binder & surface layer. This process is only applicable if the current asphalt surface does not contain areas which have failed or developed into potholes. Initially, the lot is cleaned for proper adhesion. A leveling course is applied in low spots, as needed, each job is different and requires a differing amount of leveling. Each drainage basin is evaluated to insure sub-basin corrections are made prior to the start of paving. All points of transition are cold milled to provide the necessary pitch and seaming.
New Asphalt Installation
Gravel sub-base is installed to the specified thickness. Sub-base is compacted to insure the correct density exists and parking surface is pitched towards drainage basins. Final compaction and prep work is performed. Binder course material is installed to the specified thickness and vibratory compacted to achieve the correct surface density. Surface course material is installed to specified thickness and vibratory compacted to achieve the correct surface density.
