Cold Milling

Cold Milling is the process of removing partial or entire asphalt surfaces, while maintaining or correcting pavement grade & slope. Through the use of our “in house” Cold Milling equipment Maul Paving is able to offer our customers either Partial or Full Depth Cold Milling. The depth of cold milling is specified prior to the start of the milling process. Removal thickness is determined by evaluating the existing condition of the asphalt surface.

Types of Cold Milling :

Partial Cold Milling: Is the process of removing the top 1.50” to 2.00” of surface course ONLY. In many cases, the binder asphalt layer remains intact and a new layer of surface asphalt is installed on top of the stable binder asphalt layer. Ultimately, this process provides Maul Paving’s customers a significant savings!

Full Depth Cold Milling: Is the process of removing the entire asphalt surface 3.00” to 5.00” (binder and surface asphalt layers). The overall thickness may very based on 1.) original thickness of the parking lot or 2.) how many times the parking lot has been overlaid. Once this process has been completed only the gravel sub-base remains and minor sub-base work is required prior to paving.

Advantages of Cold Milling

  • Partial Cold Milling allows for the removal of the failed surface asphalt ONLY, while salvaging the binder asphalt layer. Partial Cold Milling is much more efficient and cost effective than a complete removal & replacement process.
  • Full Depth Cold Milling allows for the removal of an entire asphalt surface, while reducing the disturbance to the gravel sub-base. Ultimately, cold milling, causes less disturbance to the sub-base, which in turn reduces the amount of sub-base prep work & additional gravel installation required prior to binder course installation.
  • Cold Milling technology offers our customers a much needed GREEN ALTERNATIVE. Cold Milling’s require far less processing & handling of waste (grindings) prior to being used in manufacturing recycled asphalt material, when compared to processing broken material removed by conventional skid steer or front end loader.
  • Cold Milling is a much faster and safer technology for removing failed asphalt. Cutting the removal time by 50%!
  • Partial Cold Milling allows for the removal of surface layer, while remaining open for car traffic prior to paving process. Thus, further reducing the impact to parking lot accessibility.

Cold Milling offers Maul Paving’s customers a powerful price advantage when compared to conventional asphalt removal!
